What is an archangel?
An archangel is a high-ranking angel at the top of the angelical hierarchy. They are messengers of God and the divine, they are often depicted as mighty warriors. They lead and give tasks to other angels due to their high ranks.
Origin of the Archangels
The origin of their name comes from the Greek word, “archai” meaning first or principal. We can generally classify the archangels based on different belief systems.
In the Christian and Hebrew bible, the only Archangel made reference to is Archangel Michael, meaning “he who is like God”.
In the Quran they made major references to Archangel Gabriel, the Muslims believe the Quran was revealed to Muhammad by this particular Archangel.
In Jewish and Hebrew literature texts they seemed to go deeper into the true nature and origin of the Archangels. They believe that there are 10 major Archangels, which are attributed to each sephirah or planet. The Christian bible tells a story of an angel who took Enoch on a journey to heaven on a chariot of fire, Some Jews believe it was Archangel Metatron who accompanied Enoch when he ascended into heaven.
Generally, the Abrahamic religion believes the Archangels were with God during the creation process, and they have always served God faithfully.
Purpose of the Archangels
- They serve as intermediaries between the divine and humans
- Archangels play important roles in protecting humans from evil forces and guiding them on their spiritual path to salvation.
- They’re also responsible for helping us see the big picture when it comes to our lives—how we fit into God’s plans for us and why He has placed us here on Earth at this time
- They bring spiritual enlightenment and elevation
- They bring abundance and success.
- They bring help in every way from the most spiritual needs even down to our human mundane needs.
Generally, most Archangel’s name end with the word “EL”, Which is one of the names of God.
Each archangel and angel have their own functions and area of expertise, for example, according to religion Gabriel is known solely to be the messenger of God. Though he can act and carry out several functions.
Archangel Michael’s purpose, according to Abrahamic religions.
- He’s also known as “the prince of light,” which isn’t surprising given that he wears a bright suit of armor.
- He’s thought to be an incarnation of God’s celestial army, leading them into battle against evil forces.
- In this mythology, he is depicted holding a sword in one hand and trampling Satan underfoot with the other.
- In another version, he wields two flaming swords while fighting off demons around him with his sharpened wings (which sounds like something you’d see in a dream).
How many archangels are there?
There are many archangels, more than we realize and know of. I strongly believe people’s knowledge of the archangels is based on their own level of consciousness and belief system. For if you ask a Christian or Muslim how many archangels are there, they might probably say 1. But a Jew might say 4 or 10 and an occultist might provide you with an endless list.
ARCHANGELS IN MAGIC & OCCULT
One of the last places we would have thought to search for archangels is in magic and occultism but lo and behold just like the bible said in proverbs 4:7 “Wisdom is the principal thing, therefore get wisdom and with all thy getting get understanding”.
Though there has been a lot of misunderstanding about the word occult. Occult simply means “hidden”, this root word comes from the Latin word “occultus” which means hidden secret or concealed knowledge.
In the New Testament Book of Revelation (also known as The Apocalypse), John sees a vision in which each one of these four angels holds a corner of Heaven’s curtain (Revelation 4:4).
After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth so that no wind would blow on the earth or on the sea or on any tree (Revelation 7:1).
Jewish literature texts such as the Midrash and Talmud identify Michael, Gabriel, Uriel, and Raphael as the four chief angels who surround the divine throne, each of whom has particular attributes.
One major similarity between the Abrahamic religions and spiritualism or the occult is that they both believe in the four primary archangels. Before occultists carry out any ritual they call forth to the angels or energies of the four cardinal points for protection and guidance and to oversee the ritual.
Spiritual people believe these 4 angels are energies representing the 4 elements namely Fire, water, Air, and Earth. So they seem to focus more on the energies during their magickal workings. Some Occultists also use the language of Hebrew to connect with these energies, they believe the angels respond better when communicated using Hebrew letters.
In addition to Hebrew letters, some also use sigils and visualization to enhance the connection.
Finally, most occultist and magickal practitioners use a system known as the Kaballah (Jewish mysticism). In this system, there are 10 sephirot or planets and each archangel is ascribed to each planet.
Angels of the Kaballah include: Metatron, Raziel, Tzaphkiel, Tzadkiel, Kamael, Raphael, Haniel, Michael, Gabriel, and Sandalphon.
How to call on an archangel
Well, there are numerous ways to get the attention of archangels depending on your belief system. If you’re a Christian or you belong to any other religion a simple prayer with faith hoping you’re heard should be it.
Below is a simple way anyone can connect with the angels regardless of their belief system.
To call on an archangel, you can use the following steps:
- Say their name aloud (i.e., “Gabriel,” “Michael”).
- Visualize them in your mind’s eye—their wings, their hair color and style, etc. Try to envision them as clearly as possible so that when they appear before you later on in this process, they will seem familiar and comforting. If you have trouble visualizing angels or archangels, try saying the name of the angel out loud while looking at a photo (or drawing) of what he or she might look like. *Remember it’s your intention that matters, you don’t have to get everything right
- Ask for help from this divine being and thank them once your request is made, this is important because these beings are busy working towards saving humanity from its earthly trials all day long. We shouldn’t take advantage of their kindness and remember the power of gratitude.
Conclusion
The Archangels are there for all of us. They are a source of comfort and guidance, helping us with our troubles, prayers, and more. It is important to remember that the Archangels are always by your side when you need them most.
They want us to be happy and healthy and successful in our lives. They want us to do good things in this world, because they know that if we don’t try our best, then no one else will either. So go ahead and ask them for their help today.
